Our very good friends have agreed to let me photograph some of the items in their collection for me to share with you here in exchange for some advice on their cellar and some upcoming entertaining they are doing.
This first item I am featuring is one of our favourite pieces, but they don’t know where it is from exactly, and the piece is not signed. They purchased this gourd at the market in Puerto Escondido, Mexico for 50 pesos (about $4.50 USD)!!!
The craftsperson who did the carving is a true artist—just look at the faces of the animals…
- This is usually the side they have facing out for display. There is a cork plug at the top.
- Moving the gourd to the left we see the armadillo…
- …I think this is a coati. Whatever he is, he’s gorgeous!…
- …some sort of wildcat…
- …full circle back to our favourite fox!
- The bottom of the gourd. Bless this person who carved this beautiful little piece. It is about 12 cm high and 10 cm round.
Thanks to Ottoman Dandy for suggesting I feature some hand-crafted items from Mexico. Check out the swooningly gorgeous men’s fashions on his site.

Nina, these are beautiful! I like the tone of brown they have.
